Millions of Americans are affected by foot pain at one time or another. Knowing how to take care of your feet, avoid foot pain and find relief when you experience foot pain can improve your quality of life. In this post, we’ll explore the causes of foot pain and discuss some of the ways you can prevent or treat foot pain.

  • Diabetic neuropathy. People with diabetes often experience tingling, numbness or pain the feet. People with diabetic neuropathy can wear braces as well as special shoes and socks to avoid pain and treat the problem.

Techniques to Avoid and Relieve Foot Pain

Buy Shoes that Fit

Ill-fitting shoes are one of the most common causes of foot pain. Buying shoes of the right size and shape can often relieve foot pain you’ve been experiencing, and can help you avoid foot pain if you’ve never had it before. These tips will help you choose a shoe that fits properly:

  • When you’re standing up, there should be around 1/2 inch of space between the end of your big toe and the end of the shoe.
  • Walk around in the shoes you choose before buying them.
  • Shop for shoes in the afternoon, because your feet flatten and expand as the day wears on.
  • When trying on shoes to buy, wear the type of socks that you plan to wear with the shoes.
  • If one of your feet is larger than the other, fit the shoes that you buy to the larger foot.
  • Buy shoes that are shaped like your feet. For example, avoid buying pointed shoes if you don’t have pointy feet.
